On the one hand, sending an invoice is the final stage of a deal you already made. There’s no need to fight for anything, no need to worry about closing. It’s pure formality. On the other hand, a sloppy invoice can leave a bad impression and make that client less likely to work with you in the future.
Let’s be real. Invoicing is simple and if you don’t mess it up badly, no disaster can happen. Still—if you’re one of those who pay extra attention to detail, you’ll want your invoice to be sharp, neat, and elegant. That’s why you’re here.
Below, you’ll see a carefully-handpicked selection of the finest business invoice templates available online. Some are 100% free, some come with a minor fee, all look 10x better than what you’d create yourself in Word or Excel.
Before we get into the list, though, here’s a thought—
Invoices are just one example of dozens of business documents you create day in and day out: sales presentations, pitch decks, proposals. All of them with the main purpose of… getting you to the position where you issue an invoice.
If you want to add a “wow” factor to your business documents, impress your customers, and close more deals, take the Storydoc presentation maker for a spin. See an example of what the tool can do:
Here's an example of a business presentation transformed in our tool:
Before
After
Slide decks are a relic of the past. With Storydoc, you’ll get interactive content you never thought you’d have. Wow your audience, make a lasting impression, and land more deals with investors. Ready in a flash.
It will only be fair if I start by recommending an invoicing template from a tool I use myself: Free Invoice Generator by Billdu.
It’s nothing flashy, but it lets me issue a business invoice in 30 seconds, doesn’t require any sign up or registration, and only stores your previous invoices on the memory of your device (so you literally share no personal information with anyone). It also leverages OCR scanning for easy data entry. Plus, it works great on mobile when you need to generate an invoice on-the-run. Great for freelancers and small businesses.
If you want something with a bit more flair, see the invoice template designs below.
Old-school
A very nice design by a tool called Invoice Home. Everything is crystal clear, adding items is seamless and swift, it’s great for printing.
Editing: in-app.
Minimalist
Similar to the previous one, with that extra bit of a modern touch, “Minimalist” by Invoice Home is another solid free invoice template. Easy-to-read for your payees, easy to customize for you.
Editing: in-app.
Invoice simple
A sample template from a free tool called Invoice Simple. Design-wise, I’m more keen on the ones by Invoice Home. This one, however, can be edited in-app but also works as an Excel, or Word invoice template you can download and edit yourself. (If you prefer to edit your business invoice template in Google Docs or Sheets, they give you this option, too, at this link). Plus, their app works wonderfully well on mobile devices.
Editing: in-app, MS Excel, MS Word, Google Docs, Google Sheets.
Timeless
As the name suggests, this design from Microsoft themselves will work as well today as it would have 50 years ago. Simple, to the point, feeling professional—exactly what you want an invoice to be.
Editing: MS Word.
Small buisness
Another free invoice template from Microsoft, unlike “Timeless” above, this one is for Excel. You get some extra fields for details such as discounts and a splash of color to guide your buyer’s eyes to where you want them to go.
Editing: MS Excel.
All those free invoice templates you saw above will work just fine, promise. But—if you want to add a bit of a “wow” factor to your invoicing consider Zintego Invoice Template (also free) or, check out these paid alternatives.
(They all cost around $2, so it’s either one takeaway coffee or fancier invoicing for the rest of your life.)
Printable
Designed for printing out, this PDF invoice template created by DigitalTemplatePaper comes as a fill-in-the-blank Adobe file. It’s very elegant and clear. The handwriting imitation at the top adds some human touch.
Editing: PDF.
Cute
To me, this invoice template brings to mind some local craft business selling boho furniture or fashion accessories. Something about the combination of fonts and colors feel very soothing and welcoming. Other than that, a highly readable design which is always a plus.
Editing: MS Word.
Quirky
A Storydoc gallery of business document designs wouldn’t be itself without one weird-ish template and the above one is just that. Something about the kamp color combination feels almost naive but, for some strange reason, it works!
Editing: Illustrator.
Corporate
Just look at the marble background in the mockup! I mean, if that doesn’t say “a million-dollar invoice” then I don’t know what does. On a serious note, though, it’s probably the most elegant and classy template in our gallery. Recommended for corporate, rather than startup environments.
Editing: MS Word.
Hi-tech
Created by Sakhawat Hosen of Bangladesh, this template for an invoice feels very contemporary and polished. It will work best for technology companies and their SaaS invoices.
Editing: Illustrator.
Swiss
Crafted with Swiss precision this template features a unique layout with differently colored columns. On screens, this will work just fine but it’s not an ideal invoice design for printing out.
Editing: Photoshop.
Elegant
Nicely dynamic, this business invoice template will be a good pick for consulting or other services. It’s professional, well-balanced, and easy on the eyes.
Editing: Illustrator.
Modern
Last but not least, probably my personal favorite from the list, a very modern and clear template for business invoices across all industries. The shade of yellow works great (but can easily be switched for any of your brand colors), the fonts used are distinct yet very legible, and I love how uncluttered it is thanks to the strategic use of generous spacing.
Editing: Photoshop.
Hope you found the perfect invoice template for you and that you’ll issue hundreds of invoices for hundreds of thousands dollars very soon. Happy invoicing!
